SAM Public Relations RICK STEVES REVEALS SECRETS TO TRAVEL IN ROME AND FLORENCE DURING SEATTLE ART MUSEUM LECTURESpecial “My Favorite Things Tour” of SAM’s exhibition Michelangelo Public and Private to be offered prior to Rick Steves’ lecture.
WHEN December 12, 2009 WHERE Seattle Art Museum, 1300 First Avenue DETAILS If you know where to look in Rome and Florence, you can see most of Michelangelo’s work—and a lot more. In an hour-long presentation, Rick Steves guides us through the delights and the challenges of Rome and Florence. His goal: to help us both enjoy the explosion of creativity and humanist spirit that came with the Renaissance and grapple with the practical challenges of a smart and economic visit there in 2010. Rick Steves is producer and host of the PBS TV series Rick Steves’ Europe and the public radio program Travels with Rick Steves. He authors 30 guidebooks on European travel, and he founded and runs Europe Through the Back Door in Edmonds, Washington. Free with museum admission. Registration required if planning to attend. Register by email at boxoffice@seattleartmuseum.org, by phone at 206-654-3121, or through the Seattle Art Museum’s online calendar at www.seattleartmuseum.org/calendar/calendar.asp. Prior to Rick’s lecture, join Gene Openshaw, writer, composer, tour guide, lecturer and co-author of several books in the "Rick Steves" series for a My Favorite Things Tour of the exhibition Michelangelo Public and Private. In spite of being "Earth's greatest artist," Michelangelo was a man with major self-esteem issues. Openshaw will explore with visitors how Michelangelo's sense of personal tragedy influenced his work in the Sistine Chapel and haunted him all his life. My Favorite Things tours bring some of the most opinionated and fascinating artists, cultural producers and community figures into the galleries to discuss their favorite works of art. More information about Openshaw’s tour and Rick Steve’s Lecture can be found in SAM’s online calendar at www.seattleartmuseum.org/calendar/calendar.asp. The exhibition is organized by the Seattle Art Museum in collaboration with the Casa Buonarroti, Florence. Lead Presenting Foundation Sponsor is the Robert Lehman Foundation. Presenting Corporate Sponsors are JPMorgan Chase & Co. and The Boeing Company. Exhibition Sponsors are the Seattle Art Museum Supporters (SAMS) and 4Culture King County Lodging Tax. Media Sponsor is King 5 Television. Additional support is provided by the Leona M. Geyer Charitable Trust, Enrique A. Tessada, and contributors to the Annual Fund.
