WHEN:
March 29, 7-8:30 pm
DETAILS:
From SAM’s series Building a Community of Thinkers, this timely discussion addresses the questions: “Do the arts matter?” “For whom?” and “How?”
While some argue that the arts are a waste of time and resources in overburdened and under budgeted schools, Professor James Catterall has demonstrated through a 12-year longitudinal study of more than 12,000 students that this is not the case. In fact, intensive involvement in the arts by middle and high school students has a direct correlation to higher levels of academic achievement and college enrollment.
In an economy facing school budget cuts and a society that demands ever higher standardized test scores, the public will not want to miss this deep dialogue about the state of education in our communities.
